In May 2025 Viking Genes Shetland - Shetland Community Screening Project launched at Mareel in Lerwick. The project's aim is to raise £1 million for Scotland’s first ever community genetic screening programme. Shetland aspires to be the first community in Scotland to benefit from a genetic screening initiative aimed at keeping people well and preventing disease from occurring or progressing, rather than reactively treating the disease, once it has developed.
